Easy to forget you’re infected

Recommended Posts

I was diagnosed in September, my boyfriend of two moths was not aware he was infected. His ex cheated and ended up infecting him we came to find out later. But, I have not had an outbreak since I was diagnosed. I was diagnosed by the NP at my doctors office and she didn’t have much info for me and she had to google what medication to put me on and the correct dose. I’m on acyclovir 400 mg twice a day. Is it weird to not have symptoms again yet? I don’t know if I’m just lucky or the medication is working. I forget to take it a lot, some days I don’t take it at all and some days I only take it in the morning and forget at night. They didn’t even tell my what type of herpes I have, do they normally type you when they test a culture? Or will I have to get a blood test to know if it’s Hsv1 or 2? I know 2 is more common genitally, but 1 is becoming more prevalent than it used to. My boyfriend has yet to have any symptoms.

I believe cultures can type it for you. If they didn't do typing you could get an IgG test and that should tell you. It is not uncommon for people to have one outbreak and never again, or to only have them rarely. Or in your boyfriend's case to never have them. 80% of people with herpes don't know because they have no noticeable symptoms. It really is an innocuous virus that rarely causes symptoms. Our society just freaks out about it because we're so uncomfortable with sex. That's why cold sores don't carry the same stigma. Exact same virus, just different location.
