Weird Valtrex Dosage for Suppression Therapy?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone -

I have HSV2 and I recently started a relationship with an H- partner. I asked my doctor to go on suppression therapy and the dosage she prescribed is to take 1g every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Is it me, or does that seem weird? I thought suppression works best with a consistent dose every day.

I think I'm going to cut the pills in half and just take half a pill (500mg) every day, rather then mess around with trying to remember to take a 1g pill 3 days a week.

Thoughts?

When I was on Valtrex for a while, my maintenance dose was 1 500 mg pill once per day, and that’s the maintenance dose I’ve heard mentioned here most frequently. Plus it’s what’s listed in Terri Warren’s book. I’d call the doctor and just say you’ve heard it’s frequently taken daily and that’d be easiest for you to remember and ask why the unusual MWF routine. Like you, I’d never be able to remember that!

It would certainly be reasonable to ask your doctor to help you understand dosage. A pharmacist could also offer some advice. Your dosage may be adjusted to account for a myriad of different factors, including body weight, other meds, and pile of other things.

I take 1000mg a day for suppression and during outbreak because any more seems to cause my blood pressure to rise, despite the fact that I am otherwise very healthy. In my case, it may be due to my body absorbing the medicine faster than some, and that may also be the case for you.

The only way to be sure is to talk to your doctor about it.
