Is it worth going to see an Infectious Disease Doctor for a guy?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I was diagnosed a few weeks ago with Herpes. The infection was probably only a week old, so the test came back negative and I don't know what strain I have. I got diagnosed at a walk in urgent-care facility who recommended I follow up with an infectious disease specialist. From personal experience or from other's stories, does anyone have any opinions about the usefulness in seeing an infectious disease doctor for men because we don't have OBGYNs to talk to?

Thanks fore replying. That's the thing, I don't really have anything specific. The walk in-clinic made it seem like going to an infectious disease specialist is just 'the thing one does' after being diagnosed with herpes, but it doesn't seem that way from my research online. I'm mostly asking now cause I just finished the course of valacyclovir the clinic subscribed and was wondering if an infectious disease specialist was who you'd go to to get another subscription for an outbreak or suppressive therapy, I guess. Mostly I'd just like to figure out who to talk to to not feel that pain again.

If your insurance will cover it (and you may need a referral) it wouldn't hurt to see a specialist...however, most state std clinics can help monitor us and prescribe meds we need. Also, your primary care doctor can take care of your health needs also in reference to h.

I've learned more from Terrri Warren's book (available on Amazon in the kindle version) and this site than anywhere else. Your mileage may vary with doctors. The nurse practitioner who diagnosed me didn't know a thing about asymptomatic shedding. The gynecologist who did my tubal was more educated, but still very nonchalant about it all. I get my current prescription for acyclovir from a physician's assistant at the family practice I now go to.

I've considered an infectious disease doctor, mainly only because I know one from the hospital I work in. But I have come to the conclusion that I will only see one if I can't adequately treat/control it with the help of a gyn first. For men, I would think a clinic (like planned parenthood) or your primary doctor could help with medications. Go to your primary armed with what you'd like prescribed though, in case they aren't the most knowledgeable about the treatments

Planned Parenthood or a Urologist. I found the two ID docs I went to were useless and expensive. Their offices were littered with posters advertising HIV AND Hepatitis drugs. Of course, I was in a state where most doctors are pathetic, Nevada so you may have a different experience, but I doubt it.
