Tingling sensation? Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I am 6 days into my primary outbreak of HSV-1. I just started getting excessive tingling down my butt and all down both legs. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this? Or is it a side effect of the antiviral? It's too late in the evening to call my doctor so I am hoping someone on here can ease my mind.

Hey Chel! Yep, totally normal ... they're called "prodrome symptoms" and they're signaling that he virus is traveling through your nerve ganglia. Nothing to worry about. :) In the future, this kind of tingling can give you a heads up that the virus is "waking up" again and could be leading to another outbreak (but not always).

Hi @Chel, yes it's normal, and yes, it could also be exacerbated by an antiviral. I've had HSV2 for about 20 years and have no memory of ever feeling what I call "the zingers." After my diagnosis a year ago and reading about prodrome symptoms, I immediately recognized having them. Shortly after the diagnosis, I started taking Valtrex, which gave me zingers every day, throughout the day--drove me nuts! After six months of that, I decided to stop since I wasn't seeing anyone. The tingling slowed WAY down to next to nothing. Now I'm trying acyclovir, which has been much better than the Valtrex for me, but I still have more zingers than if I were not on any medication at all. {hugs}
