Is it possible to have herpes prodrome symptoms if taking valtrex?

Recommended Posts

So I was diagnosed back in September and I'm currently having my second outbreak. The sores became infected so I am currently on valtrex to treat the sores and an antibiotic to treat the infection. I feel like I'm currently experiencing prodrome symptoms though and I don't know if that's even possible if I'm on the valtrex already.

It also sort of feels like a yeast infection, but there's no vaginal discharge yet. It's just tingling and itchy.

Hi Fearless wolf!

Happy almost new year to you! :)

Sorry you're having a rough go of it with the double whammy of outbreak and infection. Ouch! To answer your question, yes, it's possible to experience prodrome symptoms when you're on herpes medication. Meds only brings down viral shedding (and thus prodrome symptoms and outbreaks, too) by about 50%. Taking valtrex doesn't completely stop the herpes; it just slows it down. Best thing you can do is continue to take care of yourself on many levels (mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually) and you will heal. We're here for you whenever you need it.
