Test results: I have genital herpes, HSV-1 ... difference from HSV-2?

Recommended Posts

So I just got a call from the doctors saying I have type 1 herpes and that I got it orally , I must of gotten it from a previous partner , now I have a few questions , should I talk to my boyfriend and tell him he should get tested ? And how is type 1 and type 2 different is type 2 worse than type 1 do I still have it for the rest of my life? Could I get more outbreaks ? Or is this the only one? Do I still have to be extra careful when having sex?

Hey Jayy!

To answer your specific questions ...

- Yes, you should tell your boyfriend. He could get genital HSV-1 from you when you have sex.

- Here's a link about the differences between HSV-1 and HSV-2:

- Yes, you still have it for the rest of your life, just like anyone with herpes.

- Yes, you could get more outbreaks (but 15-20% of people never get herpes outbreaks in general, whether it's type 1 or 2)

- Yes, you still should be careful when having sex. Since you have genital HSV-1, that means that 3-5% of the time between active outbreaks, you are shedding the virus invisibly (in comparison to 15-30% viral shedding rates between herpes outbreaks for HSV-2). Read more here:

  • 2 years later...

I have had hsv1 genitally for more than 2 years.(recieved from oral sex) I have been kissing a new guy and through only kissing he has had mouth sores and cankers.

Is it possible for me to pass on the cold sore virus even though I have never knowingly had an oral outbreak?

Is it possible for the virus to move after this time frame? Most of early 2016 I have been having frequent outbreaks genitally but haven't had one now for 3 weeks.
