Herpes Transmission Statistics: Better chance of dying in a car accident?

Hi. I'm about to have the herpes talk with a non-herpes potential partner. I was thinking about the statistics for passing herpes onto another person. According to the disclosure sheet available on this site, the female to male transmission is 1% when using condoms and meds. (those are really great statistics!!)

I'm wondering what other statistic I might be able compare that to - to make my herpes situation a little more understandable. Could I say that a person has more chance of being hit by a bus or dying in a plane crash than they do with contracting this skin condition? Or perhaps there is another statistic I could refer to. What are your thoughts?

According to the US Census, 1.8% of people die in car accidents per year. In other words, you're almost twice as likely to die in a car accident than get herpes.

... and, even as you tell him these stats, it's important not to minimize it and just shake it off as nothing. There is still a chance that he can get herpes, although it's quite slim. Ultimately when it comes down to it, he either 100% doesn't get it (much more likely) or he 100% doesn't get it (much less likely). Give him the stats and let him decide what he's willing to risk and what he isn't. It's his health and you're just providing the facts so that you can keep him and yourself as safe as possible while having the most fun, connected and awesome sex possible. :)

@Adrial, I just clicked on the census link you posted and it says its no longer available :-( Do you know of any other site that would post the likelihood of getting into a car accident vs catching hsv?

I'm just trying to educate my potential partner, as I've had a successful disclosure tonight :-)
