Recently diagnosed with herpes: Questions

Recommended Posts

Hello I am 18. I recently got diagnosed with herpes. I was sick with flu like symptoms for 2 weeks prior to unusual physical symptoms. Later, I noticed an unusual burning and tingling in my butt region that I've never had before. I got it cultured, and the doctor diagnosed me with herpes type 1. I've been prescribed valtrax.

My questions are:

1. Is it normal to first feel like you have the flu prior to an outbreak?

2. I didn't know it was herpes when I had my first outbreak, and I did itch the area. Can herpes be spread to my hands and face?

3. I know herpes type 1 is usually found in the oral region, but mine is below the waist. I've never had a cold sore or any type of painful sore in or near my mouth. What symptoms should I watch out for and not disregard that could be herpes type 1 on and near my mouth?

4. And do you all have any phone call line / skype / chatroom?

Hi LoveLiveLife!

Welcome!

Here are my answers to your questions:

1. Yes, absolutely flu is common for a first herpes outbreak. Herpes is a virus, just like the flu virus. Your body will start fighting it off just like any other virus in your system. Over time, you won't have those sorts of symptoms as your body builds up antibodies to herpes.

2. It's pretty hard to auto-inoculate (spread herpes to other parts of your body). Be careful of scratching an active outbreak and then itching your eye, though, because you could get ocular herpes and that's no fun. But don't be paranoid about it. If you touch your herpes outbreak area during an outbreak, just wash your hands afterwards. Kills the herpes virus immediately. :)

3. 50% of new genital herpes cases are due to HSV-1. That doesn't mean that you'll automatically get HSV-1 on your mouth, too.

4. Nope, not yet! But I do offer one-on-one coaching via Skype! Private message me if interested. :)
